Our 2001 gathering was held at the Blair Atholl Arms Hotel, Blair Atholl, Pitlochry in Perthshire.
President David Nisbet welcomed everybody, saying he was particularly pleased to see Stu Nisbet President of the North American Society & his wife Nancy along with a large contingency from the USA. David was also pleased to see Maria Ruechardt from Germany, John and Ann Brodie Nisbet, & Peter and Celia Nisbett the latest new members to the UK Society, he went on to say it was heartening to see so many familiar faces from previous gatherings.
Following the introductions & refreshments Edwin Nisbet Moore from the USA gave our kinsfolk a resume of his recent publication “ Our Covenant Heritage” this being an account of the covenanters during the 17th century, in particular John Nisbet`s struggles, those of his family and colleagues, his severe persecution and eventually his martyrdom. This was a remarkable story , professionally researched and well presented by the author on the day.
This was followed by Sarah Nisbet giving a talk on 1652 letter she came across, during her own archive research. The letter was to the Duchess of Atholl by a Janet Nisbet who was the daughter of William Nisbet of Dean. Sarah gave an account of her further research which revealed that Janet Nisbet had married John Murray of Polmaise Castle. Sarah`s discovery illustrated how one can when researching stumble on the unexpected and how rewarding family research can be. Sarah`s story on the day was supported by the said letter, the full story later appeared in the UK Societies Summer Newsletter 2001.
Prior to the break for lunch Ray Nisbet Rolinson read out a Message from the Clan Chief sending warm salutations to all his kinsfolk and was looking forward to seeing them next year at Durham.
The assembled Kinfolk then spent the afternoon at Blair Atholl Castle just a short distance away, being given an intensive guided tour of the castle and its surrounds. During the group photograph at the Castle we were joined by a pheasant from the estate. The afternoon was concluded, with tea at the Blair Atholl Arms Hotel.
In the evening members stayed on to enjoy a post gathering dinner in the Moulin Hotel in Pitlochry. here to edit.
