Some hints for Nesbitt/Nisbet shopping:

The Nesbitt/Nisbet Society does not sell anything except a few books (most of which you can download free), and some sundries at meetings, such as Boar’s Head ties and Nisbet cap badges. We encourage you to buy authentic Nisbet products from small companies and crafts(wo)men.

Note that some shops/manufacturers may have out-of-date information and try to sell you Hume or Dunbar tartans or crests. Although both clans are related to the Nesbitt/Nisbet clan, we are a clan in our own right, recognised by the Lord Lyon and in full membership of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs. We are admittedly a small clan - but the more careful retailers will stock Nisbet materials.

  • Tartan cloth and clothing is widely available from enthusiastic and well-informed retailers who can advise on correct wear. Kinloch Anderson is one manufacturer and retailer with a good reputation. Most authentic tartan fabric is made in the Scottish Borders. You can see an authentic Nisbet tartan on our Tartan page (colour tones may vary with maunfacturer); the authentic Nisbet crest is featured at the top left of all our webpages.
  • Only a few companies make Nisbet cap badges or kilt pins; we have recently persuaded Avance Highland to make these. The badges are made in pewter, in Scotland. A number of jewellers in North America make attractive badges, but these can be difficult to import to the UK.
  • Nisbet of that Ilk, the classic (and very readable) history of the family is available from the publisher, Phillimore. Online orders attract a discount and free postage.

Please let us know of other recommended suppliers.
